Swedish Baseball Academy in Leksand In the autumn of 2006 the Swedish Baseball Academy in Leksand opened the doors for its first class of students. The Academy is supported by MLB and runs a regional secondary school with baseball as speciality, and a Baseball College at the Leksand Folkhögskola.
The Swedish Baseball and Softball association presented the idea of a Swedish Baseball Academy for the MLB in January 2006, during the ABCA Convention in Chicago. After several meetings and correspondence, the MLB announced that they had chosen to support the Swedish Baseball Academy with resources such as instructors, equipment and coach training.
The Swedish Baseball and Softball Association have, against tough competition, been chosen as one of six countries in Europe. The other countries that MLB supports are The Netherlands, Italy, France, Great Britain and Germany. All countries have chosen a similar way of how to combine studies and training for the students.
The support from the MLB, as of today, consists of professional coaches coming to Leksand (Jeff Krushell former S&C Toronto Blue Jays, Kyle Barbour S&C Arizona Diamondbacks AAA Sidewinders, Tom Gillespie Academy Consultant MLB, Dave Ewing MLB Envoy Program) and equipment. With the MLB´s professionalism and high quality standards in mind, the cooperation is something that Swedish Baseball and Softball is truly proud of.
